Prostaglandin analogs are synthetic versions of natural substances in our body, which it produces to regulate a various of functions, that acts like a chemical messenger. It's made to mimic or block specific prostaglandin (short-lived lipid ) actions, such as modulate blood flow.
Not all PGAs can actually give the results we are aiming for, so we will focus on Bimatoprost, Latanoprosta and Travoprosta, being Bimatoprost the holy grain.
Those compounds cited above, besides they main purpose is to treat glaucoma treatment, are used as a cosmetic to promote eyelashes growth, which I don't recommed because of those consequences I mentioned but it usually comes back to normal after 6 months, but it can pigment your iris for life, so be aware. Instead, we can use them to tan and burn localized fat. If your goal is to grow hair anywhere in your body just use oral minoxidil.
How do them "burn fat" ? This side effects is know as Prostaglandin-Associated Periorbitopathy, when those compounds are applied to the skin, they atrophy fat cells in the region by binding to receptors on the surface of fat precursor cells, mostly Prostaglandin F receptor. That triggers a cellular signalling know as MAPK, that when activated inactivates a nuclear hormone called PPAR-Gamma, that it's essential to differentiate into a mature fat cell and an accumulated lipid droplets. By all that process, now lipd cell don't grow anymore, so they still small and unable to store lipid properly.
How do them cause skin hyperpigmentation ? PGAs stimulate the melannocytes in your epidermis by increasing the activity of enzyme tyrosinase, which is the engine that produces melanin. That reaction is well known and used as a vitilligo treatment (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-023-32591-8)
That hyperpigmentation won't always be the way you want it to be. In light skin tones it actually looks like a tan, really pinkish color, but in darker skins it looks more like a deep brown darker spot. But it's reversible by just stop using the product. It comes back after 3-6 months too.
The "burnig fat" was not tested in any individual untill now.
