SHBG - enemy or friend?
Primarily what is SHBG?
Sex hormone binding gobuline, a protein produced in the liver essential to regulate and act as a reservoir for sexual hormones binding to necessary tissues. Controlling Testosterone, DHT, and Estrodial. It is mainly discussed for it effects on total and free testosterone. Holding about 45 percent of total testosterone the remaining 2 to 3 percent is what’s allowed to free circulate the body and attach to muscle tissue, androgen receptors and sexual functions.
That good sheeeit
Essentially Lower SHBG —> Higher free test
While higher shbg —> lower free test.
Ooga Booga time to reduce shbg to the ground to grow muh jaw and muscles for da Beckies.
I see many people wanting to lower shbg for this exact reason but when freeing up testosterone you are also freeing up DHT levels and Estrodial in the body. While also negatively affecting insulin sensitivity, increasing DHT levels and production, male pattern baldness, fluid retention, large amounts of aromatization, and metabolic syndrome. Now am I saying you shouldn’t lower SHBG? No, however be very mindful of what you are doing. High SHBG is never a good thing, while low SHBG CAN be a good thing when utilized smartly. And may even be the key component to your cycle.
Ideal ranges
Normal ranges of SHBG in adult men range from 10 to 57 nanomoles per liter. However the ideal range is a bit more nuanced with no definite answer estimates being 20-40. However following previous shbg levels and increased free testosterone will be a good tale on this rather than follow only arbitrary numbers. Ideal ranges of estrogen being 10-15 pg/ml or not allowing it to exceed 40-50 pg/ml. (Keep in mind when on elevated hormone levels everything follows suit.) And as for insulin sensitivity optimal being around 2-10 μIU/mL. Now not everyone will be or can get bloodwork so I’ll list ways to mitigate side effects and go depending how you feel.
Mitigate side effects
while Now as to dealing with increased aromatization and dht can simply mitigate by have some sort of aromatase inhibitor on hand such as Aromasin, letrozole, and arimidex and for dht a 5-AR inhibitor like Dutasteride. (Ru58841 if in puberty). For keeping insulin sensitivity high, keeping high protein diet, ideal body fat percentage 12-15 percent, vitamins such as magnesium glycinate berberine and L carnatine, peptides such as GLP-3, carbs before and post workout only, plenty of walking and cardio, with 7-9 hours of sleep. All will keep body insulin sensitive.
How to lower SHBG/increase free test
Number 1 will be AAS, specifically DHT derivatives as they have a higher binding affinity. Additionally if orally where they have to process through the liver they can and will compete with testosterone and other hormones to bind to the SHBG pushing them out making them “free”. Notorious ones being Proviron (very good at lowering shbg), masteron and primo. (Careful with these lowered shbg + super physiological levels of hormones)
Number 2 supplementing vitamins and diet
Consuming 10mg of boron daily, magnesium glycinate 200-400 mg, avoiding extreme caloric deficits for long periods of time, weight lifting and 10-30 minutes of cardio daily. Keeping liver overall healthy.
Number 3 just increasing test dose/hopping on test. If you want to increase your free test increasing overall test will accomplish the same task.
In conclusion
Optimal levels of SHBG levels should be everyone’s goal as it’s self explanatory that too low or too high of anything can be detrimental. SHBG plays an important role in the body so don’t go nuking it thinking it won’t have any repercussions as low shbg levels and metabolic syndrome/insulin resistance are tied in together. Be smart and don’t go long periods of lowered/low shbg levels, it can be a good tool to use to optimize compounds efficiency and potency. All I want is to keep you Bhais safe while also achieving goals.
Peace and love

Lmk if I overlooked anything
